Smelter workers offer to freeze wages
THE 400 Australian Workers’ Union members at the Portland Aluminium smelter have volunteered to take a wage freeze for 12 months.
AWU state secretary Ben Davis said workers made the offer at a mass meeting held earlier this week to discuss new enterprise agreement negotiations.
The offer has pleased smelter manager Peter Chellis. Mr Chellis said yesterday he welcomed the
AWU’s responsible approach to the negotiations.
“It demonstrates that all parties remain focussed on the smelter’s viability in tough market conditions in order to help protect the approximately 2000 direct and indirect jobs associated with the smelter,” he said.
