Grampians rise to the occasion in grand final
GRAMPIANS have become the story of the year after winning the Hamilton and District Junior Cricket Association under-16 grand final against Hamilton at Melville Oval on Thursday night.
After just sneaking into the top four to play finals, the young Pumas stood up at the business end of the season and as a result now have premiership medals around their necks.
Grampians first knocked off minor premier and premiership favourite Macarthur in the semi-final, despite only making a score of 79, and for many that is where they thought the story would end. They were wrong.
The Pumas went into the under-16 grand final as heavy underdogs, but did not allow that tag to stop them from experiencing premiership glory.
Grampians coach Stephen Field has been involved in cricket for a long time at various levels, but he said the finals campaign his young group produced was right up there with some of the best.
“I am incredibly proud,” Field said.
