Birthday celebrations for parkrun
ONE of Portland’s most popular community events is celebrating its first birthday tomorrow with Portland parkrun hitting the big milestone.
The five-kilometre free, timed event held at Fawthrop Lagoon at 8am every Saturday, has fast become a regular weekly activity for a number of runners and walkers in Portland, with 606 people participating during the first year.
Race director Allan Hoskins is proud to be a part of parkrun and is looking forward to celebrating the anniversary of the first event.
“We average around 60-80 people a week and we’ve had feedback from everyone who has run and it’s been fantastic and a great community event,” Hoskins said.
“It’s a fantastic success; it gets people together on a Saturday morning from all walks of life, people who wouldn’t normally be out on a Saturday morning and the social aspect is great as well.
“The run will be as normal, but we are having a colours event so we’ll be wearing fluoro colours, making sure we’re nice in bright in this miserable weather.”
