Frustrating NBN delay; Slow rollout of superfast Internet proves testing
THE technology gap between Portland and surrounding cities is expanding with each frustrating delay of the NBN rollout.
While neighbouring cities Mount Gambier and Warrnambool enjoy superfast Internet speeds of up to 100 megabits per second, Portland is lagging behind with inferior ADSL connections, struggling to reach one-tenth of that speed.
Work to connect about 6200 Portland homes and businesses was initially deferred from third-quarter 2016 to November 2016, subsequently pushing back the switch-on date from March 2017, to April 28, to the end of May, and now possibly June 30, 2017.
While many local individuals and businesses have voiced their excitement about the arrival of the superfast Internet via Fibre to the Node, the setbacks are leaving many despondent.
Peter Corbett of Powerhouse Productions said the NBN rollout cannot come fast enough for his business.
