Overseas interest in offshore aquaculture
TWO Asian aquaculture companies are in the early stages of planning to establish offshore abalone farms and possibly tuna ranching near Portland, along with associated processing facilities.
Melbourne-based advisory company Atlantis Fisheries Consulting Group confirmed on Wednesday it has two clients, one from Malaysia, the other from Singapore that had been expressing an interest since February this year in establishing aquaculture ventures offshore of Portland.
Atlantis managing partner Anthony Ciconte stressed it was still very early days, but the main economic benefit to the Portland region from the proposals would be jobs.
He said at a rough estimate there would be a minimum of 30 new jobs created.
