Coming full circle
DRAWING on his own childhood encounters with domestic violence, Dr Mark Johnson wished to encourage victims to speak up and understand that a relationship where violence is present is not okay or normal.
Witnessing a violent relationship between his own parents as a child, Mr Johnson also wanted to remind those in violent relationships to take extra caution in the presence of children.
The well respected doctor grew up as an only child in western Sydney and he considered his mum and dad’s violent relationship to be ‘normal’ until much later in life.
Both parents never finished school and both left by the age of 12.
He told the story of his grandmother abandoning his mother, left to be raised by her father before residing at a girl’s home as a teen.
Mr Johnson suspects his mother was victim to physical and sexual abuse, while also relating the family violence to alcohol abuse.
“They came into parenting with a difficult life story behind them,” he said.
