Seafarers’ valuable boost to economy
VISITING seafarers are injecting an estimated $500,000-plus a year into the Portland economy, according to a Mission to Seafarers committee member David Morland.
Pastor Morland’s comments come as Flying Angel Portland, also known as Mission to Seafarers, prepares to host this year’s Mission to Seafarers national conference, which is expected to attract about 50 delegates from throughout Australia and Oceania from August 7-11.
It will be held at the Portland Yacht Club.
Pastor Morland said the figure of $500,000-plus was a conservative one, but based it on 250 ships visiting Portland each year, with 20 crew members from each ship having time onshore and spending on average $100 each.
