Great weekend for Portland’s netballers
PORTLAND has enjoyed a strong weekend of results in the Hampden Netball League semifinals, held at Portland’s Hanlon Park and Port Fairy’s Gardens Oval.
The Tigers’ division three side is grand final bound after upsetting minor premiers North Warrnambool Eagles 26-19 in the second semi-final on Saturday, giving the Eagles their first loss of the season.
After leading by just one goal at the final change, Portland’s defence rose to the occasion during the last quarter to keep North Warrnambool to one goal while scoring seven.
Defender Tanya Knight was named best on court.
Portland’s division two outfit kept its season alive with a hard fought 32-29 victory against Camperdown in the first semi-final yesterday, the first time they had defeated the Magpies this season.
After leading by six at the half way mark, the Tigers were under pressure during the second half as their lead was cut to two at the final break, but they held firm to win the final quarter and the game.
Defender Janelle Lancaster was listed as the Tigers’ best.
