Landcare at Bridgewater celebrates 30 years
MORE than 30 years of work to try and restore Cape Bridgewater’s landscape to pre-European conditions has had varying degrees of success.
The best projects were celebrated, and disruptive and failed projects discussed, at a windy celebration at the cape last week.
Initiator of the projects, Great South West Walk co-founder Bill Golding, said the Friends of the Great South West Walk have carried out Landcare work at seven locations since 1985, often supported by secondary school students.
The coast in the vulnerable region had been impacted by sheep and cattle grazing to the edge of the area’s cliffs, with later introduction of rabbits causing further pressure on the environment, and creating widespread erosion.
