Open Gardens this Saturday
MANY of the region’s gardens are at their best at this time of the year, making Saturday the perfect time for five well-loved properties to be opened to the community.
The Rotary Club of Portland Bay has organised an open gardens day from 10am to 3pm, and four properties in Portland and Bolwarra, as well as a mystery garden, will be on show.
Co-organiser Patsy Moore said the club was “pretty excited” about what was on offer.
“They’re all looking lovely at the moment,” Ms Moore added.
Gardens vary from the beautiful surrounds at the site of the historic Caledonian Inn, Bolwarra, to the naturalistic environs of an expansive property adjoining Wattle Hill Creek.
A large vegetable garden in purpose-built garden beds and a smaller suburban property with more of a relaxing focus will also be on display.
Lyn Murphy from 29 Hurd St said her home on a suburban-sized block is surrounded by 100 roses from Bolwarra’s Treloar Roses, as well as a Manchurian Pear tree and places for people to sit and take in the pleasant surrounds.
Many of her smaller plants have been grown from cuttings, and a rose that remains strong was successfully transplanted from the Homerton family farm she grew up on.
