Portland Swimming Club preparing for drought-breaking meet
THE Portland Swimming Club has one more hurdle to jump in order to host a proposed Swimming Victoria meet in January – the club’s first chance at hosting a meet in more than eight years.
Busy making preparations for the January 13 meet, the club is on the hunt for funds to replace lane ropes – with up to date utilities a must for hosting meets.
The Portland meet will be a last chance for swimmers to qualify for the Victorian Country Championships in Shepparton from January 26-28 – with qualifications needs likely to see competitors from near and far travel to take part.
Aiming for a minimum of 70 competitors and hoping to comfortably reach triple figures, Portland Swimming Club organiser Paige Olejniczak said it was an event months in the making.
“January 13 is going to be our first swim meet in Portland for a long time, somewhere around nine years, and we’re hoping to see swimmers from Warrnambool, Hamilton and even as far as Geelong come along,” Olejniczak said.
