Wilson, Mather take Tyrendarra to win
TYRENDARRA’S undefeated start to the Portland and District Cricket Association season continued on Saturday, defeating Portland Colts by 34 runs at Henty Park.
The round five clash was the first time the sides have met since last season’s grand final – which saw Colts claim a comfortable premiership victory.
Playing off in the second round of one-day contests for the season, Tyrendarra won the toss and elected to bat first.
Opening batsmen Sam Wilson (8) and Jake Wilson (24) got the team off to what seemed like a promising start before Colts’ Daniel Kinghorn and Mathew Payne broke through with pivotal wickets.
After slipping to 3-43, Jordi Withers steered Tyrendarra’s innings towards calmer waters with a patient 24, and while Colts’ bowling attack tore through Tyrendarra’s lower order a terrific 42-run haul for Cam Mather in his first match of the season took the team on to a final total of 131.
Also in his first match of the season, Colts’ Marcus Bunney was strong with the ball, taking 1-9 with four maidens, while Kinghorn finished with 3-26 as the leading wicket taker.
Portland Colts’ innings began with a series of stutters, with top order batsmen James Chapple, Glenn Hollis and Kinghorn going in quick succession and leaving the team limping at 3-8.
Batting alongside Payne (15) and Luke Andrews (11), Scott Hamilton was outstanding, working his way to 53 with six fours and one six in an uphill battle to remain competitive.
