Swimming competition returns to Portland
HUNDREDS of talented swimmers will flock to Portland tomorrow with the Portland Swimming Club hosting a drought-breaking Swimming Victoria meeting.
Offering up the last chance for qualification for the Victorian Country Championships in Shepparton on January 26-28, visiting and local swimmers will be aiming to make a splash at the YMCA’s outdoor pool.
An important stepping stone in Portland hosting the event, its first in more than eight years, was acquiring new lane ropes – a requirement fulfilled thanks to a $12,000 grant allocated shortly before Christmas.
With months of planning going into the weekend’s competition, Portland Swimming Club organiser Paige Olejniczak said everyone involved at the club was thrilled to see the meet go ahead.
“The outdoor pool is going to be absolutely packed which is really exciting, that’s something we haven’t seen in a long, long time,” Olejniczak said.
