TEAMS will now play for the Jimmy O’Brien Memorial Shield at the Casterton and District Cricket Association’s annual T20 carnival held at Island Park.
The decision to name the shield in honour of its long-serving secretary was made at the recent association executive meeting.
The association was delighted at the support the recent T20 carnival received and delegates thought it appropriate to give the trophy a name, a name that all Casterton sports people would be familiar with.
It was decided to create a perpetual trophy for the annual event and, after seeking permission from his family, the Jimmy O’Brien Memorial Shield was created.
O’Brien was a long-time secretary of the Casterton DCA and his contributions to cricket were many and varied over a period of more than fifty years.
When he left Casterton he went on to forge a long and distinguished career with the Colts and Gorae-Portland cricket clubs as well as serving on the Portland and District Cricket Association executive.
His ability with the scorebook is legendary in the Western District as was his work with juniors and Portland representative teams.
The executive also decided to present an additional Kookaburra Rising Star award to Merino’s Sam Penfold for his excellent performance and leadership at Warrnambool Colts Country Week.
The monthly January award went to Merino’s Andrew Russell after taking nine wickets in the recent game against Edenhope.
The Association’s annual presentation and trivia night will be held at the Casterton Hotel on Wednesday March 17. All Clubs are urged to encourage their members to join with their fellow cricketers on St. Patrick’s Day.
The next executive meeting is at the Casterton Hotel on Wednesday, February 17 at 8pm. |
