Rare outright win to Dergholm

Casterton News
WHEN play resumed at Merino, Dergholm needed 37 runs with six wickets in hand to pass the Merino first innings total of 101made the previous Saturday.
When David Humphries (30) was bowled by Darren Murrell and Matt Treglown (17) presented a catch to Michael Jarrad off Andrew Russell, the Dergholm innings collapsed.
Four more wickets tumbled as the Scrubbers were all out for 85. Darren Murrell (4-31) and Andrew Russell (5-31) were stars with the ball as the Wombats grabbed the first innings points.
With 56 six overs remaining, there was plenty of time for either team to register a big swag of second innings bonus points. After Sam Penfold (1) was dismissed by Brett Vaughan, Michael Jarrad added a valuable 15 runs as wickets fell around him.
The Wombats struggled to maintain their wickets and build on their first innings lead but Matt Treglown (3-27) and Shaun Robinson (3-12) cut a swathe through the Wombats and Merino was all out for 55 in its second innings.
Dergholm had 20 overs to make 72 runs for an unlikely outright win while Merino’s task was to take 10 wickets. Darren Murrell soon had Brett Vaughan (0) and Leonard Dixon (0) back in the pavilion as the Scrubbers slumped to 2-7. Brian Ferguson (34) and Daniel Hackwill (20) then turned things around with a third-wicket partnership of 45.
On their departure, Shaun Robinson (7no) and Matt Treglown (7no) steered their team to 4-75 and outright points, with four overs to bowl.
Darren Murrell completed a great day with the ball for Merino by taking 3-38 from his 8 overs. Points: Dergholm 26, Merino 19. |
