Edenhope and Casterton square off
24 February 2010
Casterton News
CASTERTON and Edenhope will play off for the Casterton and District Cricket Association’s 2009-10 junior premiership after resounding wins in their semi-finals at the weekend.
Edenhope was at home to Merino at the Edenhope Recreation Reserve and in an extraordinary opening session on Saturday, Merino’s Ryan Reedman shattered the stumps of three Edenhope batsmen, while his opening partner Shane Bergroth did the same on one occasion.
At that stage, Edenhope was 4-5 and in diabolical trouble. In a magnificent fight back, Matt Storey (41) and Ben Jude (25) added 84 runs for the fifth wicket as the Merino bowlers tried to press home their advantage.
With their departure, Claire Nolte 3-22 and Jake Jones 1-24 grabbed some quick wickets as the Edenhope innings closed at 8-112 from 50 overs.
The Edenhope bowlers stole the limelight on Sunday and dismissed Merino 91 in 45 overs. Best with the bat was Claire Nolte (39). Best of Edenhope’s bowlers were Ben Ryan (3-16), Thanakorn Utsa (3-20), Jackson Finnegan (1-0), Kaylem Walkowsky (1-3), Clint Rokebrand (1-5) and Alex Ridsdale (1-17).
Casterton skittles Wando Vale
WANDO Vale openers Toby Murrell (25) and Jacob Shannon (11) added a valuable 29 runs for the opening partnership in their game against Casterton at Island Park (1).
Sam Diegmann (8) kept the momentum going in a third-wicket stand of 35 with Murrell. However, the last half hour of play proved very beneficial for the home team, with Wando Vale losing 3-11.
At stumps Wando Vale was 5-76 off 43 overs. When play resumed on Sunday, the Casterton bowlers were on song as the last five Vale wickets fell for just 6 runs.
Wando Vale was all out for 82. Best with the ball for Casterton were Isaac Forbes (4-10), Justin Carlin (2-12), Damian Wombwell (1-2), Liam Gill (1-12) and David Wombwell (1-22).
In the Casterton innings, Jacob Shannon soon picked up the wicket of Daniel Wombwell (6) in an impressive opening spell. Alas for Wando Vale, this was the last Casterton wicket to fall before the target score was reached. Jacob Miller (47 retired) and Liam Gill (34 retired) piloted Casterton to 1-83 and a comfortable first innings victory in the 27th over. Jacob Shannon (1-27) was the wicket taker for Wando Vale.
