A COLERAINE man was to appear in a Melbourne Magistrate’s court yesterday after being charged with the murder of a Hamilton woman.
Frances Rhook, 32, of Rasmussen Ave, Hamilton, died in Hamilton Base Hospital at 4.45am on Saturday after suffering a gunshot wound on Friday around 5.30pm.
John William Sypott, 54, of Glenelg Hwy, Coleraine, has been charged with her murder.
Hamilton police and detectives were called to a house in Rasmussen Ave about 5.30pm on Friday following reports of a shooting.
“When police arrived they found a 32 year-old woman had suffered a gunshot wound,” Senior Constable Rob Pugh, of the police media unit said.
He said the injured woman was rushed to the Hamilton hospital.
Sen Const Pugh said police arrested a 54 year-old man at the scene.
The Homicide Squad travelled to Hamilton on Friday night.
Mr Sypott appeared in an out-of-sessions hearing in Hamilton on Saturday and was transported to Melbourne by Hamilton police on Sunday.
A Rasmussen Ave resident said the street had been relatively quiet since the incident.
“It’s probably been a bit quieter than usual,” the resident said.
“On Saturday night there were a lot of cars out the front of the house (where the alleged incident occurred).
“It was lit up like Christmas. I suppose relatives and friends were at the house.”
Ms Rhook (nee Foster) was raised in a number of towns including Coleraine. Among the schools she attended were St Joseph’s Primary School in Coleraine and Monivae College in Hamilton.
Ms Rhook leaves a son Gregory and daughter Karlie.
Funeral arrangements for Ms Rhook are yet to be determined.
