ONE of Hamilton’s long running bakeries will close on Christmas Eve.
The Hamilton Bakery, in Thompson St, will finish operations with the last baking tomorrow morning and close its doors with close of business.
The family business, run by Ron and Nancy Hartwich, their daughter and son-in-law, Kathleen and Michael O’Brien, had been on the market for some time.
Kathleen said the main reason for closing the business had been the growing number of bakeries in Hamilton.
“We’ve been here for eight years now, and we feel that there is a saturation of bakeries in Hamilton,” she said.
In recent years, there have been new bakeries open at Hamilton Central and in Gray St as well as an in-store bakery at Safeways.
The Hamilton Bakery was established about 20 years ago by Andrew Murrell. The bakery was later run by Kerry Storer and the Hartwichs bought the business in 1995.
“We’ve enjoyed our time here,” Kathleen said. “We’ll take a break and then look for work. Dad is a farmer and will continue with that and mum may do some relief teaching.
