A DOMESTIC dispute at a Drumborg property has resulted in a man shot dead and his estranged wife in a serious but stable condition in a Melbourne hospital after receiving a gunshot wound to the jaw and neck.
The man, aged in his 40s, is believed to have died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
The incident is believed to have happened about 10.30am Saturday when the woman, also aged in her 40s, returned to her husband’s property in Reids Road.
Police media officer Senior Constable Wayne Wilson said the woman was shot in her car while attempting to leave the property.
Sen Const Wilson said that, after being shot, the woman drove a short distance to her parents’ house before being taken to the Heywood hospital.
She was then taken to the Hamilton Base Hospital where she underwent emergency treatment before being airlifted to Melbourne’s Alfred Hospital on Saturday afternoon.
Police from Portland, Hamilton and Heywood attended the scene of the shooting, where they saw the man’s body near the front of the premises.
A police special operations group team from Melbourne was flown to the scene.
Sen Const Wilson said the special operations group team found the husband’s body with a rifle next to it.
Police are investigating the shootings and a report is being prepared by police for the Coroner in relation to the man’s death.
The name of the dead man had not been released by police at the time of going to press.
