BRENDAN Schultz (19) made the Portland Aluminium Open Western Region Cycling Championships his own at the Hamilton cycling track at the weekend.

He was the reigning champion over the sprint and 16-kilometre distances and, after successfully defending both of these, he proceeded to add the time trial, pursuit and eight-kilometre events for a clean-sweep over all distances.

Not content with this, he then raced through the handicap field from the scratch mark to claim the carnivals major support race, the Frank McCarthy sponsored 1600m Des Smith Memorial wheelrace in the fast time of one minute 55.22 seconds.

Schultz dominated the series in a way that has rarely, if ever, been equalled in the 40-plus years history of the titles.

Hamilton won the premiership shield in the open competition by a big margin with good-placed rides from Garry Polack and Chris Eichler supporting the points tally of Schultz.

The club made it a double by also taking out the junior shield competition, but this time by a narrow two points from Ararat.

The junior win resulted from a good all-round performance from a number of lads.

Tobie Hunt successfully defended his under-17s sprint title and finished second in both the time trial and distance titles.

Jaidyn Eichler won the under-13s title for Hamilton with brother Brandan in second place.

The open team’s sprint title was also a Hamilton victory with Brendan Schultz, ably supported by Garry Polack and Mark Hermon, beating their opponents by just under two seconds over the 1200m distance to claim gold medals.

Other championship winners were doubles to Ararat pair Lewis Fulcher and Jaron Gardiner in the under-17s and under-15s juniors respectively and wins to Jayden Rippon (Camperdown) in the under-15s and to Adrian Reid (Stawell) in the under-11s.

In addition to the Brendan Schultz win in the wheelrace, other support event wins by Hamilton riders were recognised by Garry Polack, Darren Shelden, Chris Eichler and Jayden Eichler.

Ken Waldron, a former club member, returned from Castlemaine to compete. Waldron was a popular winner of the 800m handicap.

The major junior support races for the Ted Barker trophies were won by visitors Matthew Opdecoul (Horsham) and Dale Reid (Stawell).

Reid, the youngest and tiniest of the competing juniors, had the crowd right behind him in his win on the Ted Barker trophy race for the under-11s.

Despite oppressive heat and gusty winds throughout the two days, the 74-event program was race to finality free of accident or incident.

Hamilton Cycling Club extends thanks to all who assisted in the promotion.
