THE first Victorian Government Community Cabinet for 2008 will be held in Southern Grampians Shire at Dunkeld on April 22.
The night before a reception to meet members of the State Cabinet will be held at the Hamilton Performing Arts Centre for selected guests.
The invitations to the reception have already been mailed.
A Government spokesperson said yesterday that some announcements were expected to be made at the meeting.
Community Cabinets are designed to be a bridge between the Government and the people, making Government more accessible to local communities.
Community Cabinets began in 1999 and are used by the State Government to listen to issues which are important to local communities.
The cabinet in Dunkeld will be the 81st Community Cabinet visit since the program began.
The 82nd Community Cabinet will be held in Northern Grampians Shire, at Stawell, on the Tuesday afternoon.
The Spectator understands that verbal invitations to community groups and organisations have already been issued, informing the organisations of the visit.
On the day of the cabinet meeting ministers meet with community members and organisations to discuss local issues.
The day usually involves a series of round table discussions and forums on different topics and formal meetings where ministers and senior departmental officers meet with local communities and make site visits.
A verbal invitation has already been issued to Glenelg Southern Grampians Primary Care Partnership executive officer, Rosie Rowe, to participate in round table discussions with the Minister for Women’s Affairs, Maxine Morand, at the Community Cabinet in Stawell on the Tuesday afternoon.
Ms Rowe said she understood that further information would be mailed to her shortly.
Last year seven Community Cabinets were held, covering 12 municipalities.
It is years since Southern Grampians Shire last hosted a Community Cabinet – the Premier’s website archives only go back as far as 2003 and do not record any visits to either Glenelg or Southern Grampians Shire.
Moyne Shire hosted a Community Cabinet in July 2005.
A shire spokesperson said he could confirm the Community Cabinet was being held in Dunkeld on the morning of April 22 but did not yet have details about time or venue.
