THE weather was perfect and Island Park was in tip-top condition for the Casterton Show last Saturday.
A huge crowd attended the 143rd Casterton Show and were not disappointed. There was something to do for the entire family from a variety of novelty rides to delicious food and, of course, the livestock, art and craft and showjumping competitions scattered right round the picturesque oval.
Children love when the show comes to town. They head for the rides, the showbag stall and the food stalls. An added attraction at the Casterton Show are the pony rides, the miniature steam train rides, the speed shearing contests, Pete’s Pet Show and the annual showgirl competitions.
According to show society secretary Bec McClellan, the gate was up thanks to the wonderful weather.
“”Who wouldn’t be enticed out on a day like Saturday?” she said. “Although cookery entries were down and the weather hadn’t been kind to the town’s flowers in the days leading up to the show, we had record craft entries, all of a brilliant standard.
“What a difficult job for the judges. Our photography section was once again groaning at the seams with very high quality entries. Another tricky one for the judge. Nor did the schools let us down in the art section.
“The district’s cattle section was very well represented with some beautiful animals, and the sheep were of an extremely high standard. It’s easy to see, too, why the Western District is famous for its wool. Some of the best looking birds in the district were in the poultry pavilion, showing off their plumage.
“The horses were in full swing, with the promise that Sunday would be just as exciting and well attended as Show Day. There were some stunning horse and rider teams in the arena, that’s for sure.
“Side Show Alley was full all day, and by the screams and laughter coming from there, it certainly sounded like there was some fun happening,” Ms McClellan said.
