THE pan is hot, the butter is ready and the mixture is stirred in readiness for Pancake Tuesday celebrations in Hamilton today.
The Uniting and Anglican churches will make pancakes today, also known as Shrove Tuesday, to mark the day before Ash Wednesday and the start of Lent.
South-west residents have the opportunity to purchase pancakes from the churches with money raised to go to different charities.
Hamilton Uniting church’s Reverend Peter Cook, and Hamilton Anglican church’s Father John Howells said Shrove Tuesday and making pancakes were two traditions that went hand-in-hand.
“The idea usually was they used up all the little bits of food that you were not supposed to be eating for Lent, that you had given up for Lent,” Fr John said.
“You got all of the bits and pieces and put them in a big pancake and finished them up.”
Hamilton Uniting church members are selling pancakes for Uniting Care from 10am until 2pm in the empty building under Harvey Norman, with access through the Safeway car park.
Rev Cook said funds raised for the event would go to help a number of different people.
“At the end of it all the appeal supports all kinds of projects over Victoria and they are all aimed at helping people in need in some way,” he said.
“You get some for families and homeless people; there are quite a few meal programs over the state that it supports, a wide variety of projects.”
Rev Cook said Pancake Day had now been running for 10 years and Hamilton’s Uniting Church had participated every year.
The Anglican Church Mother’s Union is hosting a Shrove Tuesday Pancake Day Tea from 6pm to 7.30pm.
The tea will run in the Canon Julien Centre and sweet and savoury pancakes will be offered.
Fr John said raised funds would be given to a charity.
