HORSHAM based jockey Holly McKechnie won her first Hamilton Cup when the Darryl Dodson trained Finiguerra grabbed a thrilling last stride victory over game front-runner The Black Oak.
In a driving finish it appeared the five-year-old son of Niello had won right on the line, but McKechnie still thought she had left her run too late and said same to runner-up jockey Lincoln Coffey after passing the post.
“To be honest, I thought The Black Oak had too big a lead and I wouldn’t be able to get to him, but to this horse’s credit he fought hard and gave his all.
“I actually congratulated Linc as we pulled up, but luckily we got the bob,” she said.
