PORTLAND Coasters Under-14 boy’s team won the Division Two grand final at the Gold Star Classic Victorian Junior Championships in Ballarat, placing them ninth in the state.
“They did a really good job; they were up there with the best of them,” coach Greg Morrissey said.
The Coasters lost to Bendigo, the eventual champions, in their first game of the competition, 28-15, before comfortably beating Echuca and Horsham.
Portland’s success is especially noteworthy considering the much larger populations of its competition.
“For our little population we did very well; they beat places of 50-60-70 thousand … Bendigo has 100 thousand and to lose by 13 points, they’ve done a fantastic job,” Morrissey said.
