IT may have been a peaceful walk at the Tyrendarra Indigenous Protection Area, but it could not stop Federal Coalition frontbencher Andrew Laming from mentioning the impact of the carbon tax on local health services.
Dr Laming, the shadow parliamentary secretary for regional health services and indigenous health, spent Tuesday afternoon with local indigenous representatives and Member for Wannon Dan Tehan to gain a greater understanding of challenges facing people in the far south-west.
The two parliamentarians spent Tuesday afternoon discussing health issues with local elders and representatives at a community lunch hosted by the Winda-Mara Aboriginal Corporation at Heywood.
It was followed by a group tour of the Tyrendarra Indigenous Protection Area, and the Lake Condah Mission site.
Winda Mara chief executive officer Michael Bell said the group discussed issues such as depression, which was a growing concern in the local indigenous community, and some of the programs provided at DWECHS in Portland.
“We decided to visit the Tyrendarra IPA because it is a National Heritage Landscape Area, and it is important to the well being of members of our community,” he said.
Dr Laming listened to the concerns, and was supportive of many issues the broader indigenous community had raised recently, particularly in relation to programs and services that should be under Medicare
