PORTLAND WorkSkills now has 10 qualified volunteer English as a second language (ESL) tutors after a special training session on Thursday.
Workskills taining manager Kathy Taylor said there was a need for ESL tutors in the Portland community, with immigrants already coming forward to be assisted.
Mrs Taylor said care would be taken to match the appropriate tutor to the prospective student.
The lesson was taught by Australian Multicultural Education Service (AMES) tutor Margaret Smith, who was impressed by the Portland volunteers.
“They’re very enthusiastic,” Ms Smith said.
“Their life experiences lend them very well to this sort of volunteering. Many of the students know people who were immigrants and needed to develop their English skills when they arrived.”
