A POD of orcas, also referred to as killer whales, was seen off the coast of Portland on Wednesday.
A number of reports or sightings near Cape Nelson and Lawrence Rocks were received by the Portland Observer, and Department of Sustainability and Environment (DSE) senior biodiversity officer Mandy Watson confirmed the whales were orcas.
“They were also seen in Warrmabool this (Thursday) morning,” Ms Watson said yesterday.
While rare for the general public to see orcas around the south-west, Ms Watson said plenty of fishermen sight them in waters around Portland and they weren’t as rare as some may think.
Orcas visited Portland in 2009 and Ms Watson said through photographs of the pod and their dorsal fins, DSE discovered they were the same whales that visited the New South Wales coastal strip where southern right whales frequent.
Greg Amor and Nigel Simmonds were in separate boats on Wednesday afternoon when they spotted the orcas between Lawrence Rocks and Point Danger.
