ON Wednesday three Safeway employees celebrated 35 years of working at the Portland supermarket, having been there almost since the store opened, in 1977.
Bronwyn White, Karen Spencer and Mick Jennings have each spent their 35 years at Safeway differently.
Mrs White was officially employed as a checkout assistant on July 25, 1977 — her first job out of high school, at the age of 16.
“It had only just been built when I came down from Heywood and there was nothing else available,” Mrs White said.
Still working at the front end of the store, Mrs White continues to enjoy the challenges and rewards of personal service.
“I love what I do, meeting customers and working with my colleagues. I enjoy meeting people from around the world, the regulars and the older customers who come in for a chat and the amazing people I work with,” Mrs White said.
