PORTLAND’S decision to follow the newly-merged Hamilton clubs into the Hampden Football Netball League will be good for business say team sponsors, but the move may damage the Western Border League beyond repair.
On Tuesday night Tigers club members voted to join the Hampden league next year, creating a 10-team competition once the vote is approved by the Victorian Country Football League.
None of the existing Hampden league teams wear the black and yellow colours of Portland so it is expected the club should retain its traditional colours.
Major sponsors are hoping the change of competition will bring their businesses a new audience.
Sponsors Stringer Clark Lawyers said being involved in a league made up of Victorian clubs made sense for their solicitors.
“From Stringer Clark’s perspective the change to the Hampden League is welcomed as our client base is predominantly in south-west Victoria,” partner John Cramp said.
Assets Real Estate director Sam Carter said while the move would give the company exposure to a different clientele, he didn’t think sponsoring a club in a larger league would have any impact.
Glenelg Shire mayor Gilbert Wilson, who is also works at Keppel Prince Engineering — a major club sponsor — said he expected sponsors big and small to support the Tigers’ move.
