THE region’s first all-ages Indigenous surf school kicked off on Sunday afternoon, and organiser Luke Axisa was impressed with the turnout.
Mr Axisa, a passionate surfer and Koorie youth development worker with Dhauwurd Wurrung Elderly and Community Health Service (DWECHS), said 38 people aged from six to their late 30s had joined in on the first of 10 sessions.
There were equal numbers of males and females joining in, and quite a few participants were also from the same family, he said.
The day was to have fun, promote community and spending time together as well as learn about water safety and fitness.
“Aboriginal people from here are sometimes referred to as saltwater people, so this ties in with that,” said Mr Axisa.
