SPORTING groups that call Alexandra Park home say the ground is in desperate need of upgrades but council is neglecting it.
The West Portland Sporting Community (WPSC), which represents 520 sporting club members from Westerns Football Netball Club, Gorae-Portland Cricket Club, West Portland Junior Football Club, Portland BMX Club and the Portland Greyhound Racing Club, say the ground is the most widely used in Portland but receives little attention compared with Hanlon Park.
The group was formed in April this year to lobby for both long and short-term funding for Alexandra Park.
President of Gorae-Portland Cricket Club, Craig Baldock said the ground hasn’t received any significant upgrades since the clubrooms were built in the mid 80s and there are numerous safety issues at the ground.
Mr Baldock said there is insufficient run-off on the netball courts, the oval’s boundary is too close to the ground and players have to negotiate oncoming traffic every time they go from the change rooms to the oval.
