TWO new faces have been elected to the Glenelg Shire Council for the next four years after yesterday’s declaration of the poll inPortland.

The two new councillors are high profile Portland YMCA executive officer Anita Rank and long-time Portlander and Lions club member Max Oberlander.

They will join incumbents Geoff White, Gilbert Wilson, Karen Stephens, John Northcott and Robert Halliday, who were all comfortably re-elected.

Both Crs Rank and Oberlander said they were very pleased with their results and thanked their supporters and families.

In other developments yesterday:

  • · Long serving Cr White indicated yesterday he would accept a nomination for the mayor’s position at the statutory meeting on November 6.

He said he believed it was important that a Portland-based councillor at least challenge for mayor.

His nomination appears a certainty after Cr Halliday confirmed he would nominate him for the position.

“Why wouldn’t I? He topped the vote again in this election, the people have spoken.

Cr White will likely face Casterton-based Cr Stephens who has previously indicated she will be a candidate in the internal mayoral contest.
