A NEW education centre inPortlandwill provide 24 undergraduate medical and allied health students with clinical placements from January next year.
The centre will be established at Dhauwurd-Wurrung Elderly and Community Health Service’s new facility at the former Lewis Court Home for the Aged site inWellington Rd.
Five units at the site will also be used as student accommodation as part of the new centre.
DWECHS chief executive officer Ros Alexander said on Monday that work on converting part of the west wing ofLewis Courtinto the new centre would start later this week.
The exciting new development is the result of a multi-agency partnership within the Portlandand Heywood communities involving DWECHS, Portland District Health, Active Health Portland, Heywood Rural Health, the Winda-Mara Aboriginal Corporation and Guardian Pharmacies.
It is expected to have a special focus on Aboriginal health by introducing clinical placements for undergraduates in Aboriginal general practice and community settings.
