EXPECT to hear the rumble of as many as 100 motorbikes this Saturday as Christmas preparations get into full swing.

The annual Heywood to Portland Toy Run gives motorbike riders a chance to get out on the road and catch up with friends, while also collecting donations of — and personally donating — toys, food and money to people in need, through the Salvation Army.

Leaving Heywood at 10.30am, organiser David Upton said the group will travel along the highway toPortland, where they will stop at the tourist information site opposite the Alexander C Store Shell service station. They will then be escorted through the city by Portland Police, with lights and sirens, from 11am.

The convoy will travel to thePortlandforeshore, where people are welcome to make donations to be handed over to the Salvation Army.

Mr Upton said he loved to see the look on children’s faces as the bikes rode into town, and appreciated being able to help disadvantaged kids.

“You really feel good knowing you’re doing something for the community. The Salvation Army have said this is their main fundraiser for Christmas here,” he said.
