TWO families have received a horror Christmas present, after a fatal car crash on Mount Baimbridge Rd.

Two men, both aged 19, were in the dark blue sedan which was Hamilton bound; one died at the scene while the other was airlifted to Royal Melbourne Hospital with life-threatening injuries.

Ambulance Victoria’s John Mullen said the injured man, believed to have been the driver of the vehicle, suffered serious head, facial and internal injuries; he was placed on life support before being transported.

Acting Supt Nick Finnegan said speed was being investigated as a factor in the crash, which saw the vehicle leave the road and roll, before coming to rest against a power pole, shortly before 3am.

“The sad part is, at this stage, that it’s one person that won’t be sitting around the Christmas table; it’s just a senseless waste of life and with Christmas knocking on the door, we’re pleading with everyone to heed the road safety message.

“This will impact on the whole community … just take it easy on the roads.”

The crash comes just over 12 months after a six-person fatal at Penshurst, which claimed the lives of five young people around the same age and about a week after a fatal crash on Muntham Hill.

The Major Collision Investigation Group is heading to the scene to investigate.
Anyone with information is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or visit www.crimestoppers.com.au.
The crash brings the state’s provisional road toll to 261, eight less than this time last year.
