THE Fire Danger Period for the Southern Grampians Shire Council will start on Monday at 1am.
The period usually runs until the start of May, depending on weather conditions and fire danger that has occurred during the season.
The south-west had previously been warned about the likelihood of above average temperatures this summer, after blazes burnt through more than 4000 hectares of property in Casterton.
Hamilton CFA captain, Wayne Nagorcka said the crew was expecting a busy season.
“I’ve seen various things, but from what we’ve gathered it’ll be a normal fire season, meaning we’ll have a series of fires,” he said.
“People need to be vigilant in what they do and really inform themselves about fire safety. This includes people who live in town.”
Any fires lit in the open during the fire danger period, with out a permit, carry possible penalties of up to $17,000 and/or 12 months imprisonment.
All burn-offs should be registered with the VicFire burn-off notification line on 1800 668 511.
‘Can I or Can’t I’ brochures can be accessed online at www.cfa.vic.gov.au.
