VICTORIA’S Department of Health has issued a heat health alert for the south-west tomorrow, but the Bureau of Meteorology is only forecasting aPortland maximum of 28C, with the real scorcher coming on Friday.
The BOM is expecting a maximum of 39C on Friday, with a cool change arriving by Saturday.
The Portland forecast (as of yesterday) is for a sunny day on Thursday with a range of 16-28, then 20-39 on Friday.
Glenelg Shire Council has passed on the official warning to everyone in the shire.
“Residents and visitors should make preparations necessary to respond to heatwave conditions, given the many impacts hot weather can have on human health, normal operations and essential services,” the statement said.
The Health Department said heatwaves can affect anybody, including the young and healthy, but there are certain population groups that are more at risk than others.
People over 65 years old; those with a chronic medical condition or disability; and people living alone or socially isolated are at higher risk.
