PIGEON Ponds celebrated Australia Day in style and maintained its place at the top of the Casterton and District Cricket Association points table with a comprehensive outright win over Dergholm; its second outright victory for the 2012-13 season to date.
Dergholm was always going to struggle to chasing down the Ponds score of 6-409cc of the previous Saturday, and was dismissed for 135 from 39 overs in the first innings.
Forced to follow on after the afternoon tea break, the Scrubbers experienced a second innings collapse to be all out for 58 in 18 overs.
Casterton maintained second place on the points table with a hard-fought first innings win over Wando Vale. The Vale batsmen knew they had to bat out the 72 overs if they hoped to pass Casterton’s first innings and after an opening partnership of 113, the Vale batsmen dug deep in their quest for the first innings points.
Alas, their first innings total of 240 fell short of the victory target by 116 runs.
Edenhope continued its recent good form with an easy win over Merino. The Wombats batted first and were dismissed for a moderate 81 in 37 overs. By the end of play on the first day, Edenhope had already grabbed the first innings points with an overnight score of 3-105.
Edenhope was all out for 253 the following day, including a coveted hat-trick to Merino’s Matt Kurzman. It has been an amazing season for hat-tricks.
The Wombats showed improved form with the bat in the second innings and reached 8-152 before stumps were drawn.
