Steve Zippel joint winner of citizen of the year award
WELL-KNOWN Casterton identity Steve Zippel has been named the joint winner of the Glenelg Shire Council’s citizen of the year award at the Australia Day celebrations held atIslandParklast Saturday.
In accepting the award, Mr Zippel told the large crowd that packed theIslandParkpavilion for the Australia Day celebrations he was honoured to have been announced as the joint winner of the prestigious award and said it was something he never expected to receive.
“I couldn’t believe it when the council contacted me in December and said I was the joint winner; I just never expected it,” he said.
Mr Zippel shared the award with Tyrendarra’s Rawson Orchard, with Sarah Davey ofPortlandawarded young citizen of the year and Friends of the Great South West Walk awarded community group of the year.
The award was presented by Glenelg Shire Mayor Cr Karen Stephens who said Mr Zippel had been a dedicated volunteer in the Casterton community over many years and actively involved in a large number of community groups.
“We are very proud to present these awards, as they acknowledge individuals who are outstanding role models, who have made a positive difference in our communities,” Cr Stephens said.
“As well as his volunteering efforts, Steve was president of the Casterton Business and Tourism Association for six years, helping to organise town events, he is president of the Casterton Junior Basketball Association, and has also been associated with the Casterton-Coleraine Junior Football Association since 2004.
“Steve has always been a role model, encouraging sportsmanship and active participation, and always willing to officiate for any organisation that he is involved with,” Cr Stephens said.
