IT was back to school for hundreds of children and a number of new teachers at Casterton’s three schools last week after a lengthy Christmas-New Year break.
CastertonSecondaryCollegewelcomed three new staff members, John Keenan, Mark Jones, and Jo Liu, and a host of new Year seven students to start the next phase in their education.
CastertonPrimary Schoolhas three new teachers as well, Phil Connolly (Grade four), Tracey Sartain (Art) and Tim Macmichael (Physical Education). Nineteen students started their first day at school last year in the prep grade and school Principal Rosemary Lewis said there they all settled in well and adjusted quickly to the school routine.
SacredHeartSchoolstarted the new school year with new co-principals, Noreen McLeish and Margaret Timms.
Education Minister Martin Dixon has wishedVictoria’s 880,800 students good luck as they head to school for the first day of the year.
“The first day at school is an exciting time, though some preps, and I’m certain many parents, may feel a little nervous,” Mr Dixon said.
“Heading to school for the first time is a wonderful milestone in a child’s young life, and one that parents and students will remember forever.
“For the rest of the students who are returning to school after the summer break, I am sure they will relish the chance to catch up with friends and start getting excited and motivated for the year ahead,” Mr Dixon said.
About 2500 new graduate teachers took up posts in Victorian government schools for the start of the 2013 school year.
- 880,800 students will attend a Victorian school;
- 553,100 students will attend a government school;
- 488,600 primary and 392,200 secondary students will attend a school;
- 75,300 preps will attend a school, including 51,200 in government schools; and
- 65,800 Year 7s will attend a school, including 36,200 Year 7s attending a government school.
There are 1533 government schools, including 1132 primary schools, 77 primary-secondary schools, 242 secondary schools, 78 special schools and four English language schools throughoutVictoria.
