THE ribbon has been cut and Daly’s Portland IGA supermarket is now officially reopened — impressively just nine months after the building was devastated by fire.
A crowd of people attended an official opening ceremony at the supermarket on Monday morning as Mixx FM added to the atmosphere by broadcasting live from the store.
Store owner Michael Daly spoke to the crowd and thanked everyone who helped along the journey.
“How do you turn around a bomb site in nine months…with the help of a lot of people,” Mr Daly said.
“After the fire we had to move forward quickly and there are a number of people who we need to thank…the community also showed great support and we realise we need you guys as much as you need us.”
Glenelg Shire mayor Karen Stephens was in attendance to cut the ribbon and she congratulated store management on their efforts.
“You showed great confidence and determination in your rebuilding. We must thank you for having such confidence in the community to help you to get yourselves up and going again.”
“You utilised local tradespeople, looked after your staff and created one of the greenest and energy efficient supermarkets in the south west. Congratulations, it’s been a long and hard nine months but it certainly will be worth it,” she said.
