THE last flight from Adelaide to Portland lands last Friday, with just two passengers on board.
SPECIALIST surgeons from Adelaide will continue to visit Portland District Health despite Sharp Airlines axed the Portland-Adelaide service earlier this month.
Visiting orthopaedic surgeons fromAdelaidewill fly into Mt Gambier and will then be shuttled to Portland with the help of volunteers , according to PDH director of nursing Frank Megens.
“This was the system that was used previously and while it was more convenient to have flights into Portland it won’t threaten the service,” Mr Megens said.
The number of visits by surgeons is expected to stay the same.
The visiting surgeons program has expanded in recent years and PDH now receives more than 20 surgeons regularly from Adelaide, Geelong and Warrnambool.
