DAY one of the annual Melbourne Country Week saw a nail-biting victory for the Bendigo bank HDCA team against Yarra Valley.
Yarra Valley had been promoted to Division Two of the competition after winning their final in Division Three last summer and they were keen to display their skills at the higher level.
With the match being played at Endeavour Hills, a venue that was new for Hamilton, skipper Michael Ross was far from unhappy by being asked to bat first by his opposite number at the toss.
Although the wicket had a small amount of green grass running through it, it was very hard and the weather was extremely hot under a blazing sun.
Ali Ross and Sam Kerber began their senior representative careers for the HDCA by getting the team away to a solid start.
Both batsmen were strong on the drive with Ross also adding some sweetly timed cut shots to anything that was short.
They gave Hamilton the best start seen by an opening pair years as the score mounted against an attack that was far from poor.
