TRANSPORT company Ryans Group hopes to have its Portland depot open in the next month as it expands its general freight services in the south-west.
Glenelg Shire Council last night voted on a request by Ryans Group to allow B-doubles to travel on the first 100 metres of Learmonth St in order to access its proposed depot on the corner of New St — the former Portland Holden / Hyundai dealership.
Ryans managing director Graham Ryan said that, if the truck movement is allowed, he’s optimistic the planning permit application to transform the site into a depot can be approved, and the business can start in a month’s time.
Ryans Group also hopes to expand inHamilton, with the possible take over of Kalari’sHamiltongeneral freight division.
“We plan to take over or buy the general freight division of Kalari and continue to operate general freight throughout the south-west under the Ryans banner,” Mr Ryan said.
“Our first step is intoHamiltonto get it up and running… we’ll be using the same employees and we hope to open another depot inPortlanddepending on a planning permit.”
A spokeswoman for Kalari said the company was still in negotiations with a number of local freight operators and a decision regarding who will take over the general freight decision would be made later in the week.
