WESTERN Victoria MP, David O’Brien, has asked the Victorian Agriculture Minister to take another look at allowing commercial hunting of wild kangaroos in the Southern Grampians.
Similar ideas have been floated by Southern Grampians Shire councillors as recently as 2011, but wider interest died off.
The parliamentary request has prompted a range of responses from MPs, running from encouragement to outrage.
Mr O’Brien, a National Party State Upper House Member, has suggested that the meat could be used for dog food or even for human consumption.
However, Western Victoria Liberal MPs have pointed out that it may be difficult for meat processing companies to meet human food regulations, while making a profit during a seasonal hunt.
