ELLY Hateley is ready to tackle assignments as the new photographer of the Portland Observer.
BAYVIEW College 2012 graduate Elly Hateley has officially joined the ranks of the Portland Observer as a cadet photographer.
Miss Hateley took up her appointment on Monday, but this isn’t the first time she has worked with the Observer team.
Since she undertook work experience at the newspaper office in 2010, Miss Hateley has worked here on a casual basis, helping out in the photography department when needed.
“It helped prepare me in case something bigger came along,” she said, and that “something bigger” arrived with the decision by photographer Kirsty Hill to spread her wings and head off overseas.
“I was excited and hopeful because of the way things were, then I got a letter offering me a permanent position, and I got a bit giggly,” she said.
Initially interested in journalism as well as photography, Miss Hateley’s work experience helped her realise she was more passionate about photography, but still has an interest in journalism and writing.
