VIOLENCE against women starts with a lewd comments in a bar on a Friday night.
It starts with a woman being groped in the street.
And it continues with the silence of the other men around, unwilling to speak up and say “no, that’s not acceptable”.
Victoria Police Chief Commissionser Ken Lay wants men to consider what type of “shallow sense of masculinity” and “twisted sense of entitlement” validates this type of abuse.
He also wants to know why men are so quiet on the issue.
“Our culture is filled with men who hold an indecent sense of entitlement towards women,” he said.
“Our culture is heavy with warped and misspent masculinity.
“And every day the casual groping and lewd comments that go unchallenged erode our standards.
“It’s a social issue … it’s a bloke’s issue.
“Men, I want you to consider why blokes are so quiet on the issue.”
