REIGNING Bendigo Bank HDCA A grade premiers St Mary’s got their title defence back on track with a hard fought victory against Byaduk at Melville Oval on Saturday.
Knowing that they simply had to win the match or face their season being written off, the Saints responded with a good total of 7-163 on a wicket that was not at its best for batting.
Having been under covers for most of the week due to the weather, the surface had only had a single day of full preparation but still gave the players a chance to play their usual games.
While the carry is not where we want it to be, it still gave both teams the chance to play their shots and the fact that 320 runs were scored on that day means that the wicket is not far from being right.
Ali Ross dropped down to No.3 in the Saints batting order and the move helped the right hander make 77no as he held the innings together for the home team.
Only his skipper Michael Ross, with 23 could, pass 15 as Ali guided the side to the final tally.
