A SNAKE handler was bitten by the world’s most lethal snake while presenting at the Building and Allied Trades union picnic in Portland on Monday.
Snake and reptile show owner Scott Grant, of Terang and aged in his 40s, had just finished showing the crowd an inland taipan and was trying to put it into a bag when it struck him.
Stuart Marra, who was enjoying the union picnic at the Friendly Society Reserve with his family, said Mr Grant was just telling everyone how deadly the snake was.
“He grabbed the bag and using the handle he tried to put it in but the snake kept deviating away from the bag and then it bit him on the thumb,” Mr Marra said.
“I could see blood and I said to him ‘I guess the show is over’, and he said ‘Yeah’.”
